CLOTHING FOR WINTER

   

Wool is good for cold weather. It is still warm when it's wet.
Be careful! -- Wool can shrink in hot water or in a hot dryer.
Wool needs ironing.
It's expensive when it's new.

 


 

Silk is good for hot and cold weather.
Silk is strong and lasts a long time.
Be careful! -- Silk can shrink in hot water or in a hot dryer.
It's expensive when it's new.

 


Down is good for cold weather.

It's very warm. But it's not warm when it's wet.
Down is inside blankets, jackets, and mittens.
It comes from under the feathers of a duck or goose.
Be careful! -- It's difficult to wash.
 

 


Leather is good for cold weather.
It's strong and lasts a long time.
Be careful! -- Leather is difficult to wash.
It's expensive.

 


Why should you wear a hat in cold weather?


This coffee is hot. But in five minutes it will be cold. The heat goes up and the coffee gets cold.

But this cup of coffee is still warm after five minutes! The heat stays in.

You are the same. Your heat goes up too. It goes out from your head. If you don't wear a hat, you will get cold faster. If you wear a hat, your body will stay warm for a longer time.

Cotton is good for hot weather. It's cool.
Cotton is strong and lasts a long time.

Polyester comes from a factory. It's not good for hot weather.
It's easy to wash.

CHEAP CLOTHING

You can buy good second-hand clothing for very little money. One person had the clothes before but now they don't need them. A second person can buy them cheap. You buy the clothes second-hand. You can buy second- hand clothing, furniture, toys and other things at a flea market, or at a yard sale at a house, or at a second-hand store.

In Boston, there are many Goodwill Bargain Basement stores. They are also called Morgan Memorial stores or Morgie's. They sell second-hand clothes, books, lamps, shoes, toys, etc. There are other second-hand stores too.
